Dear Alderman Reilly:
I am a conservative Republican who maintains a residence in your ward and generally agrees with all of Donald Trump’s criticisms of Chicago’s governance. I find your petty and childish attack on Trump more embarrassing to Chicago than Trump’s peccadilloes. Don’t you have something more important to do than trying to undo an honorary plaza? Are you auditioning for “corrupt ignoramus of the month on the city council?”
The City of New York also tried to retaliate against Trump and found that the Constitution precluded such petty retaliation. You are quite open about using city power to harass and retaliate against Trump because he has exercised his right to free speech and participated in the democratic process. Your behavior is flagrantly unconstitutional; but what do you know? Most members of the Chicago Council are incompetent lawyers. People don’t hold the city council in high regard, but you just dropped that body to a new low with your latest tactic.
Point One: Chicago is a mess. Taxes are high, services are deteriorating, and there is little hope in prospect. Cook County also has the highest taxes in the nation, and like Chicago wants to increase more taxes on residents of the city and county. You call this a record to run on? The Mike Madigan-led Democratic corruption in Springfield has made the State of Illinois a national basket case and laughingstock.
I don’t agree with everytign Trump says and indeed I am preparing a critical column about him for my blog.
But the idea that some low-life local politician would try to harass the man because of his free speech views is repugnant to me and any thinking citizen.
Point Two: Contrary to Democratic Party and NBC News propaganda, “stop and frisk” is not unconstitutional. One federal judge made such a claim, but she was removed from the case for bias. So the ruling has zero precedential value. The Soviet-style Mayor of New York, mired in his own corruption scandals, fixed the appeal to prevent a ruling that would have very possibly reversed the district judge and approved stop and frisk.
I have had a presence in this neighborhood for 45 years. I am working in Chicago on a full-time, short-term basis. I can assure you that until recently you never saw police on Michigan Avenue. You tell me security is improving. My eyes tell me the contrary. Who do you expect me to believe? You? Or my lying eyes?
Why don’t you devote some energy to fighting corruption in the city government and leave Mr. Trump alone? Can’t find any corruption in Chicago? Call me; I’ll show you where it is. Then you can actually do something useful to earn your salary.
Tens of millions of Americans agree with Trump about his criticism of this city. Jerks like you might create a backlash and trigger a tourist boycott. How would you like that?
I would urge you to revoke your proposed ordinance forthwith. If you actually plan to proceed with your idiocy with a hearing, I ask to be notified so I may appear and speak in defense of Trump and in opposition to your harebrained behavior.
