New Hampshire Second District congressional candidate Andy Martin is in the Middle East investigating allegations that American intelligence reporting was falsified to seek favor from the Obama administration. Andy is making final preparations to drive into the Eastern Desert of Jordan, up to the border with Iraq where ISIS is actively operating. Dear Granite Stater:
This is my sixth letter to you from the congressional campaign trail and once again comes from Amman, Jordan where I am preparing to approach the ISIS threat where Jordan Iraq and Syria come together in the Eastern Desert “panhandle.” We will be going into the desert along a road which I knew well thirteen years ago when I went into Iraq a few days after the fall of Saddam Hussein. The road was then known as the “highway of death” because of the unexpected risks which travelers encountered.
As part of a long process of discernment and evaluation of the risks, we have decided to ramp up the trip slightly. We will be stopping in Ar Ruwaished. But instead of stopping there we will then continue on towards the Iraqi border as long as we feel it is safe to do so. ISIS bombed just on the other side of the border last week so we will be cautious.
To give you a little more background on the ISIS threat in the region, two years ago there was a fear that ISIS would swoop down from Palmyra and seize the Jordanian city of Ar Ruwaished, please see link #1 below. Ultimately ISIS was stopped. But Russian bombers have been in the area during the past few days.
We will never know what really went through the mind of President George W. Bush when he invaded Iraq. But afterwards, the Bush administration planned for and began construction on a billion-dollar U S embassy in Baghdad. That embassy is now a white elephant.
But, before Iraq, and afterwards, Jordan was actually the “nerve center” of U. S. operations in the Middle East. The U. S. embassy in Amman, capital of a nation of just six million people, has between 1,600 and 2,000 people working here.
Jordan is increasingly becoming an unofficial “capital” of the Middle East. The situation in Iraq speaks for itself; Syria is a tragedy. No one would locate a “center” in Saudi Arabia. Lebanon is quiet, but lives under the constant threat of sectarian conflict. Ironically, the Saudis have now built their own massive embassy in Amman. When I first came to Jordan 45 years ago Amman was a much smaller city. Today Amman has become the crossroads of the Middle East.
I have located what I think is a highly experienced driver to take me into the desert. When we return, I’ll provide you with a full report.
In closing, I would like to make a few remarks about Donald Trump. What is often forgotten, just a few months later, is that Trump ran as the “peace” candidate in the Republican primaries. While Trump exaggerates the timing of his opposition to the invasion of Iraq, since he only came out against the war in 2003, not 2002 as he claims, Trump saw early on that the Iraq invasion was a fiasco.
In my opinion, Trump has the strongest possible “endorsement” for the American people to consider. The entire Republican foreign policy establishment, that supported our disastrous Iraq invasion, has “disendorsed Trump.” The people that got it wrong on Iraq now condemn a man who got it right, much earlier than the “experts” did. In other words, Trump has made the right enemies.
Both Clinton and Trump have promised to deal with ISIS. I can assure you ISIS not just going to fold up and go home when they are told that they are being “eliminated” by our new president. The continuing mess in Iraq makes it difficult to defeat ISIS. The chaos and confusion in Syria similarly negate the possibility of easy answers. Trump does not have a gaggle of advisers on war and peace as Clinton does (including Clinton’s stable of turncoat Republicans). But Trump has a very fine advisor, retired General Michael Flynn. I think Flynn has a better chance of “getting it right” on the Middle East than the failed foreign policy establishment that led us into Iraq.
Trump has a way of saying things that undermine his core message and his core competence. He thinks he is a “pro” but he is really a rookie. After his mea culpa last week, we could use a second helping of humility. Nevertheless, in a choice between Clinton’s disastrous foreign policy record and Trump’s potential to listen to a team of sensible experts, I am comfortable supporting Trump. I hope you will consider supporting Trump as well, whatever your concerns about his occasional verbal lapses.
This I know: the American people are fed up with politicians that promise not to go to war, and then go to war; who claim to be advised by experts and are only being advised by armchair pundits in Washington and New York; who take credit for “ending” wars only to confess later that the wars have become endless.
I invite the discredited experts and establishment to join me in the Eastern Desert of Jordan as we go up against and into the border where ISIS is literally on the other side, and not just located in the next armchair.
My decades of experience in the Middle East, and my proven track record of “getting it right” in the past means I could be a very strong and serious voice for New Hampshire as the next congress debates crucial issues of war and peace.
Don’t let New Hampshire’s notoriously corrupt liberal media lie to you as they promote my unqualified opponents in the September 13 GOP primary and as they try to grease the skids to reelect extreme liberal Annie Kuster. I am the only candidate with the credentials to stand up to either presidential candidate, and to demand that we only pursue sensible and sustainable policies in the Middle East. American lives will depend on how you vote.
