New Hampshire Second District congressional candidate Andy Martin will be in New York Sunday to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center and the United States. Andy was one of the earliest tenants at Two World Trade Center but he had moved out by the time of the first attack on the WTC in 1993. He was scheduled to visit the WTC on September 11, 2001 but was running late, which may have saved his life. Dear Granite Stater:

 

This is my eighth letter to you from the congressional campaign trail and comes to you as I prepare to be in New York on Sunday for the commemoration of the fifteenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the United States.

 

Forty-three years ago the Port Authority of New York recruited me to become a tenant at the World Trade Center to offer consulting on terrorism and protecting against terrorism. The terrorist attacks at the 1972 Olympics had heightened concern about terrorist attacks on vulnerable targets and foreign trade generally. My counterterrorism credentials were well known (see below). I was one of the first tenants in Two WTC.

 

Client matters eventually took me to midtown. But in a scary coincidence, I was scheduled to be in the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11, 2001. Fortunately for me, I was running late.

 

I saw the towers fall from the 78th floor of my building and later went downtown to assist in the chaos.

 

The world did change on September 11. Although liberals make fun of the “war on terror,” there is genuinely a war against terror and terrorists. It is a global war. ISIS is spreading. Al Qaeda is still active. “Homegrown” terrorists are a new and constant threat.

 

Neither my primary opponents nor the incumbent Democrat have the experience to help lead congress in a sensible direction fighting terrorism. Last month I was in the Middle East, at the intersection of Iraq, Syria and Jordan, assessing and evaluating the security situation. Many politicians in congress have belatedly stated they were “misled” in 2002-2003 when they voted to invade Iraq. The problem: few in congress have any real world experience. Most incumbents are career politicians. Few of them have been to the Middle East or studied conditions there. President Obama’s failed policies have created an explosive situation. There are no simple solutions.

 

Last month I was traversing Europe and the Middle East. You have to see the amount of travel and trade to realize how closely the world, and the United States, is tied together. Airports in London, Istanbul, Geneva and Amman were packed with travelers. Even if we bring jobs home as Republicans promise, the United States is still the world’s greatest trading nation. We can and should have a very cautious military policy but we can’t withdraw from the world.

 

If you nominate and elect me I will bring to congress my decades of independent international and counterterror experience. Neither Clinton nor Trump will be able to bamboozle me into voting for self-destructive policies. There is almost certainly going to be a vote on either a declaration of war or an authorization for use of military force (AUMF) in the new congress. That vote will involve the lives of our families and neighbors in New Hampshire. I can cast an informed, and restrained, vote. My opponents cannot.

 

I urge you to give careful and serious consideration to my candidacy, because I have the unique experience to be your experienced voice on national security. Voting for a congressional candidate is not a causal matter. The person you nominate and the person you elect will vote on life-and-death matters of vital importance to New Hampshire and every citizen.
