GOP Presidential Candidate and Contrarian Commentary columnist Andy Martin says that in Iowa, “‘Big Mamma Clinton’ shot herself in the foot”
GOP presidential candidate and “Contrarian Commentary” columnist Andy Martin explains why Hillary Clinton lost Iowa, and why she is likely to lose the South. “The media are lying,” Andy says. “There is no ‘Clinton firewall’ in the South. Clinton’s gun control attacks on Bernie Sanders have backfired. She has shot herself in the foot. In attacking Bernie’s ‘Vermont values,’ Clinton showed she is just another Democratic Party tinhorn dictator, a third term for Obama of more gun grabbing, more executive orders and more Obama-style ‘my way or the highway’ dictatorship. Guns are the ‘canary in the mine shaft,’ and they are singing out loud and clear that Clinton wants to restrict firearms ownership. By saying very little in response, Sanders has turned around the gun control issue and made it a big winner for him. The liberal media are ignoring this simple truth out there in plain sight.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Andy Martin says “Big Mamma Clinton done shot herself in the foot”
GOP presidential candidate and “Contrarian Commentary” columnist Andy Martin says Hillary Clinton shot herself in the foot by attacking Bernie Sanders on gun control
Andy accuses the liberal media of failing to tell the truth, because the Vermont narrative on guns conflicts with the gun control orthodoxy of the Democratic Party
Andy says the “Clinton firewall” in the South is an illusion
Is Hillary Clinton “toast?” Probably not; but Andy opines Clinton is coming perilously closer to the toaster
Andy says the only way Clinton can recover quickly is by apologizing to Bernie Sanders; she is unlikely to do so, and thus will be threatened by a continuing undercurrent of opposition during the primary season

This is my eleventh letter to the American people from the 2016 campaign trail. I’ll have lots more to say about the GOP candidates in the days before the New Hampshire primary, but first some comments on how the “coronation” of Hillary Clinton became instead an “accidental discharge” of a firearm.
Eight years ago in 2008 I called the turn in Hillary Clinton’s fortunes. She began a “comeback” but it was too late. Eight years later I am back with a prediction about Clinton and this time it is not a positive one.
Because I am both a columnist and a candidate, I get to tell you the “inside” story that the liberal media will not. Plain truth: Hillary Clinton shot herself in the foot in Iowa. I have serious doubts that she can recover. While it is too early to predict she will lose the nomination, Clinton has cast a cloud over her future.
After reading this column there is only one way Hillary can make a quick recovery. She needs to issue an apology to Bernie Sanders and move on. I doubt she will.
In the military, an “accidental discharge,” firing a weapon accidentally, is a very serious offense. So too in politics.
Hillary is not very original or creative. So like many lawyers she tries to follow a “template.” She has been following the Obama template that says the only way for a Democrat to win the White House is to ignore “swing” voters and concentrate on the “base.” Unfortunately, like all templates, the Obama model is now four years out of date. Republicans, moreover, are unlikely to nominate a tin soldier such as Mitt Romney as their candidate.
Since the 2000 election “gun control” has been off limits for Democrats. In fact the words “gun control” have even been banished from the Democratic Party lexicon. Now they refer to “gun safety” measures. Whether called gun control or gun safety, Democrats want to take away your guns. Democrats peddle the fantasy that “guns” kill people, when in fact people kill people, sometimes using guns.
The “guns kill people” statistics are also vastly inflated because most gun deaths are due to suicides; there is no evidence that a suicidal individual will be prevented from killing himself or herself by restricting access to guns. A suicide might be delayed, but not likely prevented, through more firearms restrictions. Suicide should be treated as a mental health problem, not a gun control issue.(More on this aspect of “gun control” in another column.)
Vermont, which Bernie Sanders has represented for decades, is an unusual place. There are virtually no state gun control laws. Other than federal laws, which apply everywhere, Vermonters have chosen to be the state “laboratory” or “model” for what happens when a state simply ignores gun control regulation and allows firearms to be bought and sold without local restrictions. Nothing happens.
Clearly, states and cities with the strictest gun control laws, such as Chicago and California, are where the greatest gun deaths occur. Vermont is empirical proof that gun control neither encourages nor prevents misuse of firearms. Obvious question: if Vermonters do not have gun control, why isn’t Vermont a Wild West, shoot’em up place? Because Vermont is a civilized state where people do not walk around trying to kill each other. (Likewise, my own state of New Hampshire is not a hotbed of firearms misuse.)
It is noteworthy as well that Vermont has usually been under the control of Democrats in recent decades. Have they abdicated on the gun issue? Not at all. They have ignored it.
Bernie runs for office as a “socialist” (more on that in another column) in Vermont by ignoring national gun control agendas and campaigning as a representative of Vermont’s people and Vermont values. In short, no crazy gun control demands.
And here is where Hillary shot herself in the foot. She thought it would be easy to attack Bernie on gun control. And, yes, her “base” loved her slams. “Bernie, you voted for this, and voted against that,” Hillary accused Bernie. Bernie, not always the nimblest debater, defended himself by invoking Vermont values (the “small, rural state”) but he has inadvertently turned Clinton’s gun control attacks into a net positive for him. Instead, Clinton’s attacks have undermined her own campaign, allowing Sanders to grow his national presence as the de facto “pro-gun” Democrat.
If Clinton had never launched her gun control attacks on Sanders she would have probably won the Iowa caucuses convincingly. Gun control cost her a win in Iowa. There are no two ways, no way at all, around that reality. Instead, she had to settle for a devastating draw. Likewise in New Hampshire, if Clinton pursues the gun control agenda she will give Bernie an even bigger win in the Granite State than he is already likely to garner. Here’s why.
Gun ownership is a bipartisan issue in rural and small states. Not only conservative Republicans own guns. Yes, Democrats own guns too. In traditionally rural areas such as Iowa and New Hampshire, gun ownership is prevalent in most areas of the state. Iowans and Granite Staters feel they can police themselves, their communities and their gun shows without more federal regulation.
Bottom line: the more Hillary attacks Bernie on the gun control issue, the more she loses moderate-to-conservative Democrats, of whom there are still quite a few in the Midwest, South and New England. Hillary’s gun control attacks on Bernie backfired. Iowa proved, once again, that guns are toxic for Democrats, not only in races between Democrats and Republicans, but also within the Democratic Party itself.
Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a gun control nut, may have tens of millions of dollars to promote gun control. But there are tens of millions of Americans who own guns and they don’t want Bloomberg telling them how to live their lives and how to buy or sell guns locally.
The Democratic mantra is that we are a “dangerous nation” and “unlike any other in the civilized world in our tolerance for firearm ownership.” They fail to recognize–that they are right! We are still a pioneer and frontier nation; rugged individualism is coded in our national DNA. The “Mommy Party” simply doesn’t have the “guns” to take away our guns. “Mommy” Obama failed, and now “Big Mamma Clinton” has shot herself in the foot.
Does Hillary have an anti-Bernie firewall in “Bubbadom?” I don’t see such a firewall. I see a forest fire starting when Clinton tells southerners she wants to take away their guns. Bernie will surprise again.
The liberal media won’t report how gun owners voted vis a vis Clinton/Sanders in Iowa. They are too embarrassed. They were cheering when Clinton launched her “gun safety” attacks on Sanders. The media don’t want to contradict their own orthodoxy: guns and Republicans are “bad.”
But the evidence is now out in the open for everyone to see. Gun control is killing off the Clinton candidacy.
Ladies and gentlemen: the Democratic race is going to the convention! You can thank Hillary’s gun control attacks on Bernie for the coming chaos in the Democratic Party. Big Mamma Clinton done shot herself in the foot.
